For over sixty years, KEF has built pioneering HiFi speakers capable of producing reliable and accurate sound. Through thorough testing and acoustic expertise, KEF have now fully invigorated the R Series with advanced components originally developed for their benchmark Reference Series speakers. The award-winning MAT™ (Metamaterial Absorption Technology), the latest tool available to the R Series, uses maze-like channels to eliminate 99% of unwanted sound from the rear of the driver, specially developed for a truer response.
Anyone familiar with KEF speakers will instantly recognise the signature Uni-Q driver array. The principle of this design places the tweeter in the centre of the mid/bass cone, creating a single acoustic source. This classic KEF innovation, along with the newly introduced MAT driver design, an ultra-low distortion midrange motor, Shadow Flare waveguide surround, and a host of other technologies inspired by the Reference Series ensures that the unique Uni-Q Array performs more accurately than ever before, with an ultra-wide listening arch that defies the “sweet spot”.
Underlining the three-way design of the KEF R3 Meta, a 6.5-inch hybrid aluminium cone driver sits below the Uni-Q Array. As the name would imply, this driver consists of a thin aluminium layer atop a paper cone. The combined strength of these two materials ensures the rigidity of the driver during use, resisting the strenuous kinetic energy of bass production. As a result, the R3 can deliver deep low-frequency sound whilst retaining precision and detail. The geometry of the driver also expertly manages resonance and improves time alignment with the Uni-Q Array.
To augment the power of the drivers in the R3 Meta Bookshelf Speakers, KEF have employed a rear-facing bass reflex. However, the advantage that the R Series has over other speakers at its level is its flexible port. Far too often, the turbulence created by rigid vents as air is forced from the cabinet introduces a distinct level of resonance into the system. By using flexible walls, as well as improved flares, the R3 is shielded from unwanted colouration of mid-range frequencies and enjoys cleaner bass.
The size of the cabinet make the KEF R3 Meta a substantial choice for small-medium home audio. Control the room whilst using only moderate space in it. This is possible thanks to the shared technology across the R Meta range and you will find the same drivers in the R3 as you will in the top-of-the-range R11. To house these incredibly versatile components, KEF have integrated Constrained Layer Damping with fine-tuned internal bracing, ensuring cabinet vibrations do not leech into your music.
Protect your speakers from debris and damage. KEF understand that their speakers appear in a range of environments in which a layer of protection may be essential. That’s why they have optimised their speakers all the way down to the acoustic performance of its magnetic microfibre grilles. A circular configuration of 1,801 holes has been cut to align with each driver for minimal impact when attached. Each grille aesthetically compliments the speaker colour, appearing in black, grey, walnut and indigo.
