Key Features
The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO is a mid-range manual turntable equipped with an Ortofon 2M Red Cartridge and includes a phono cable, 78 RPM round belt, as well as many other accessories for fine-tuning and adjustable setup. It comes in an impressive range of colours and finishes on an MDF chassis—known for having great anti-resonance properties. As well as its anti-resonant chassis material, the turntable platter features thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) around its inner rim to add weight and limit wow and flutter.
Many features of this turntable, including the tonearm and suspension, are embedded with the high-quality technologies of higher-spec, professional Pro-Ject ranges. At this price point, finding a turntable with a one-piece carbon fibre tonearm and such a broad colour selection is a unique opportunity for vinyl enthusiasts to enhance their home audio experience.

"For those in the market for a deck costing less than half a grand, the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo is a must-listen."
"This is the best turntable available for less than £500 I’ve yet to test and the result is that the Debut Carbon Evo has to be seen as a Best Buy."
In response to customer feedback, Pro-Ject have fitted the Carbon EVO with built-in electric speed control. This helps users switch speeds effortlessly; something of increasing importance as nine-inch and 45-RPM records grow in popularity. Find the speed control switch at the bottom of the turntable’s plinth, re-located there to keep the upper surface sleek and minimalistic.
In addition to 33 and 45 RPM speeds, this turntable is supplied with an extra round belt to accommodate 78 RPM playback from shellac records. All you’ll need to add is an appropriate 78 cartridge (Sold separately. Click here for more information).
Pro-Ject has certainly outdone themselves with colour selection for the Carbon EVO model. Choose from an impressive array of nine variations. Each turntable has either been hand-painted with eight layers for vibrant and bold colour or clad with real-wood veneer. The range of bold colours, classic neutrals, and traditional wood finishes means there is something to suit all tastes.
At the base of each MDF chassis are three height-adjustable, TPE-enhanced metal feet, helping to decouple the turntable from the surface beneath. Three feet, rather than four, offers better stability to the turntable on uneven surfaces; something essential to achieving the best sound out of your system.
An 8.6-inch one-piece carbon fibre tonearm is a rare find on turntables under £500. This is due to carbon fibre’s superior acoustic properties which would typically be reserved for high-end Hi-Fi separates. Yet the Debut Carbon EVO, in typical Pro-Ject fashion, brings high-spec features to consumers at lower price points. The tonearm is lightweight yet rigid, offering an impressive carriage of sound. It also features special sapphire bearings, high-purity copper internal wiring, and a shielded termination box for even smoother and more detailed sound reproduction.
The Debut Carbon EVO comes with a pre-fitted Ortofon 2M Red Moving-Magnet Cartridge which delivers a characterful and slightly warm sound. This cartridge has been designed to retrieve information from the record groove with accuracy and control so you get Hi-Fi that’s truer to the source material. Coming ready-mounted out-the-box also means that you’ll cut down on initial set-up time and get into the music sooner.
This turntable comes with a Connect-it E RCA Phono Cable which is semi-balanced and has low capacitance with great shielding. It is an excellent match for the Debut Carbon EVO, but regardless of which cable you switch this out for, the turntable’s gold-plated connectors ensure a consistently secure connection for smooth signal transfer.
A turntable motor will always vibrate, but a good turntable will combat this vibration with a sophisticated suspension system. Pro-Ject does exactly this with the Carbon EVO. While their previous suspension systems were strong, this freshly redesigned suspension makes tweaks to vibration reduction for an even more pristine sound. By drawing on the success of suspension systems in higher-end Pro-Ject turntables, the new Carbon EVO suspension offers sophisticated design at a more affordable level.
As with turntable motor suspension, Pro-Ject also combat the inherent flaws common in platter design. They acknowledge that while previous metal platters offer great durability and robustness, they give rise to resonance. As a solution, the Carbon EVO platter is damped from within (mounted to the inner rim) with a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). This material adds further weight to the platter and limits noise, wow and flutter during use.
